10 April 2014 | Verenigde Staten, Bellingham

We had a fantastic week in New York, and we have now arrived in Bellingham, where we would stay with our host family for about 3 weeks. Carol and Joe are my hosts and they are great. Really nice people and two extremely nice dogs (Oliver and Delsey) Oliver used to be a bit barky when I arrived but I think he likes me now (he even gave me a hug! ^^).

Saturday April 5th, Today was the first day in Bellingham and we decided to go out for walk with the dogs. We went to Memorial Park for the photo assignment we had to do. Memorial Park is a park for honouring the many heroes of various wars that gave their life to protect the lives of others. We also went downtown to get an idea of what Bellingham was like. I figured that Bellingham has a great diversity of culture, people and scenery.

Sunday, this was probably one of the best days in Bellingham, we (me and Joe) went to Mt Baker to go snowboarding! The first time to do anything like for me. We had an instruction to show how we had to do snowboarding. Then we went down. We had a lot of fun and a lot of falling. But after about 3 rounds we got the hang of it and it went pretty well I think! It's extraordinary to have a mountain like this so close.

Monday, we had our first lecture today about baseball, we also had a tour of the College and the library of Whatcom Community College.
We had a welcome reception in one of the buildings with lemonade and brownies! A really tasty welcome ;) we explained about our final projects and the assignment we had to do and after that we were free to go.

Tuesday, Ulli (our 'guide') took us downtown to take a look around and see Bellingham. Luckily he took us to the parts where I have not been before with my hosts. I realized that the people in this city are quite helpful and friendly. We also went to a pioneer park, which I found really interesting. They had a small town with very old wooden buildings which are actually used during that period of time and they decorated the buildings in the style of 'the old days', which was pretty neat.

Wednesday, today we went to Lynden, a place which was originally founded by the Dutch. And so there were a lot of dutch items like: windmills, postkantoor (post office) and some other nice things. We went to a small museum which showed us something about the town and its history. It was pretty interesting and the museum was run by elderly volunteers so it was nice to have a chat with them as well. The rest of the day was less interesting, we had 2 lectures and one of them was almost impossible to understand because the lecturer was talking about various things which made no sense to us whatsoever.

Thursday, today was quite impressive. We went to Mt. Vernon, which is up in Skagit County. We went to the courtroom to see various people who are accused of some crime. Keith Tyne (Jeremy's host) would explain something about the judicial system in America and his involvement in that system. He also took us inside the jail to see how it was like and how things worked inside a jail. It was very special to see everyting. We had no more lectures today and so that was the highlight of this day.

The next day we will be going to Seattle to see a baseball game and go to an outlet mall. My hosts will meet me after the game to go to Carol her mother to stay over in Seattle. But I will save that for the next blog, which will be posted soon, I hope ;)

Kind regards,

Marvin
